Description RARE: Ochetoceras canaliculatum Fossil Ammonite Middle Oxfordian, Jurassic Le Vanneau, Deux-Sèvres, France This exceptional and rare ammonite specimen represents the species Ochetoceras canaliculatum, a classic member of the Middle Oxfordian stage of the Upper Jurassic period. It was discovered in the well-known marine Jurassic strata near Le Vanneau, in the Deux-Sèvres region of western France — an area historically rich in fossil finds. Ochetoceras is characterised by its distinctive deeply incised canaliculate (grooved) venter, narrow whorls, and fine ribbing. These features are easily seen in this well-preserved specimen, making it both scientifically and aesthetically significant. The genus belongs to the family Oppeliidae, within the superfamily Haplocerataceae, and the order Ammonitida. This species thrived in open marine shelf environments, where fine carbonate sediments allowed for excellent fossilisation. The Oxfordian stage marks a time of active ammonite diversification, and Ochetoceras canaliculatum is often used for biostratigraphic correlation in European Jurassic sequences.
